About Regional Center

During the Golden Jubilee year in April 1976, the Institute started its activities in Belgaum to reach 5 Southern State i.e. Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Western Maharashtra.

Shri. P. R. Dubhashi (I.A.S.) Divisional Commissioner, Belgaum inaugurated the first batch of Local Self-Government Diploma (L.S.G.D.) Course. Initially, the Institute started its activities with the help of Karnataka Law Society (K.L.S.) which permitted the AIILSG to conduct L.S.G.D. Classes in R. L. Law College campus at Tilakwadi.

The Sanitary Inspectors Diploma Course was introduced in July 1976. The classes were conducted in the premises of R.L. Law College with one class room and one office room. The office of the Regional Director, South Zone was in “Nishigandha Building” No.752/2, Behind Hari Mandir, Angol Extension, Belgaum 590 006.

As the response from this region was overwhelming, it become imperative to construct a building of the Institute at Belgaum. In the year 1980 a piece of land admeasuring 14 Gunthas was purchased from South Konkan Education Society (SKES).

On 19th April, 1981 foundation was laid down by Shri P G Kher, the then President of the Institute for a 2 storied building with 3600 Sq.Ft. carpet area to provide all modern infrastructure for the Institute, such as Library, Museum, Lecture Halls, Administrative Wing, Guest House and Conference Hall etc.

In order to keep up with the modern trend in office automation and EDP needs of the Local Bodies a Computer Centre was added to the already existing facilities in 1987.

To provide in-house Need Based Specialised Training to the officials of the Local Bodies not only from South, but from throughout India, it was decided to add a 2nd Floor to the building in 1992 with modern facilities to accommodate about 40 officials and resource persons.
