EMPHASIS ON FULFILLING PEOPLE’S EXPECTATION
The 23rd meeting of Maharashtra Mayors Council was held on Sunday, 26 April, 2026 at Sthanikraj Bhavan, Andheri, Mumbai. It was presided over by Mrs. Ritu Tawde, the BMC Mayor who is the ex-officio President of the Council. The formation of the Maharashtra Mayors’ Council was an imitative of Mr. Ranjit Chavan, who also acts as its chairman, spoke on the need to have such a body to deliberate upon the issues of the municipal corporations, enhancing the powers of Mayors, and to present them to the state government from time to time. The meeting of the Council was held after a long gap, as in between there were no elected bodies on the Municipal Corporations. Mrs. Ritu Tawde said that our emphasis will be on fulfilling expectations of the people.
The Maharashtra Mayors’ Council was established in 2012 to act as a forum of the Mayors of the municipal corporations in Maharashtra. The All India Institute of Local Self-Government which is celebrating its centenary this year houses the Mayors’ Council.
The following Mayors were present in the meeting: Mrs. Neeta Thackeray, Mayor Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Mrs. Sharmila Pimpolkar, Mayor, Thane Municipal Corporation, Mrs. Dimple Mehta, Mayor Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, Mr. Ajiv Patil, Mayor, Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation, Mrs. Sujata Patil, Mayor Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Mrs. Harshali Chaudhary Thavil, Mayor, Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation and Mr. Narayan Chaudhari, Mayor Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation. These Mayors are seen here with Mr. Ranjit Chavan, President, All India Institute of Local Self-Government (AIILSG) and Mr. Laxmanrao Latke, Hon. Director, AIILSG.
While the Mayor, BMC is the ex-officio President of the Council, Vice-President is elected for one year. Mrs. Nita Thackeray, Mayor, Nagpur Municipal Corporation was elected as Vice-President of the Council in the meeting.
Mr. Ranjit Chavan, President, AIILSG is the Chairman of the Council. Mr. Laxmanrao Latke, the Convener of the Council, in his speech gave information about the powers of the Mayors, the earlier resolutions of Council posed to the state government, etc.
