Project Management Support Unit, Srinagar (J&K)

Project Details:
  • a) Project Intro: In the month of March 2018,Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) hired and deployed services of 7 firms (IEC Partners) for generating awareness and conducting Information Education and Communication (IEC) activities under Swachh Bharat Mission in all 35 administrative wards of Srinagar Municipal Corporation. The Project Management Support Unit (PMSU) from All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG) is engaged for monitoring and handholding the whole project in Srinagar.
  • b) Project Area: Srinagar (Union Territory of J&K).
  • c) Project Description: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation is actively working in the field to ensure scientific solid waste management for the city. SMC has a total area of 294 sq.km which is divided into 35 wards. The total population of the city is 11.92 Lakhs (2011 Census). The average per capita waste generation is about 0.4-0.6 kg out of which 30-50% waste is bio-degradable. After following due tendering process, SMC engaged 7 IEC Partners for capacity building of citizens of city to educate them to segregate the waste at household level and has started collection of segregated waste in all the 35 administrative wards of Srinagar. The IEC Partners are successfully conducting capacity building amongst the masses. The Information, Education & Communication (IEC) Partners are conducting various types of activities at all levels including household level, community level, ward and ULB level. They are carrying out special campaigns and encourage the households as well as bulk waste generators to segregate their waste at source. The Srinagar Municipal Corporation aims to make Srinagar a safe, resilient and litter free city by 2022.

    The Project Management Support Unit (PMSU) is providing regular technical handholding support to the IEC implementing partners including creation of specific strategies/ innovations for each ward/ sector. The PMSU team undertake Daily, Weekly, Monthly reviews of the work and initiatives taken by the IEC partners through field surveys and Focus Group Discussions (FGD) with citizens. The PMSU team has already structureda proper MIS structure for reporting as part of monitoring.

    As of April 2020, a total number of more than 15000 activities are conducted on different administrative wards of Srinagar Municipal Corporation by the empanelled IEC Partners under the supervision of the Project Management Support Unit. IEC activities have been conducted at different levels to target all types of audience who are involved in solid waste management system of Srinagar city.
