About Us

The Regional Centre for Urban & Environmental Studies (RCUES) at All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG), Mumbai is established by the now Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), earlier Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), Government of India (GoI) in 1968 to undertake urban policy research, technical advisory services and strengthening work capabilities of municipal officials and elected representatives from the States of Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and UT's of Diu, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Lakshadweep in the western region and States of Assam and Tripura in the northeast region. RCUES, Mumbai is recognized as a National Training Institute (NTI) and is supported by the MoHUA, GoI. The Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department of Government of Maharashtra (GoM) is the ex-officio Chairperson of the Advisory Committee of the RCUES, Mumbai.

Ministry of Urban Employment and Poverty Alleviation (MoUE&PA), GoI and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have set up the `National Resource Centre on Urban Poverty' (NRCUP), which was anchored at RCUES at AIILSG, Mumbai.

From 2013, AIILSG, Mumbai was empanelled by the now MoHUA, GoI, for providing technical support to the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the field of water supply, sanitation, sewerage and drainage systems. Later in 2015, RCUES, Mumbai was identified as a technical service provider in Municipal Solid Waste Management projects under SBM, Urban launched by the now MoHUA, GoI.

Along with ULBs, AIILSG, Mumbai is also engaging with multiple stakeholders like NGOs/CBOs, SHGs, private sector organisations and financial institutions at city level for providing technical and strategic support focusing on preparing action plans/strategies, technical assessment reports, CSPs/CDPs/DPRs as well as providing on-ground support by engaging with communities for improvement in various urban sectors to ensure improved quality of life to the citizens. AIILSG, Mumbai is also working with the objective of bridging the gap between the cities and states for sustainable services under various urban development missions.

From 2017, AIILSG is empanelled among one of the 35 agencies in India for conducting Integrated Capacity Building Programmes (ICBP).

Through these activities, an enthusiastic team at RCUES, Mumbai will continue to strive towards improving the capabilities of municipal officials with a broader objective towards developing able governments thereby enabling better cities.
